4 incidents that ruined my morning

After a sleepless mosquito-pestered night I got up in the morning to watch whats likely to make news in CNN-IBN. Nothing unusual, it has become a practice to sensationalize violence-rich scenes  in media, perhaps I should be thankful as I have got something to share with you which would have not happened had I not watched this particular channel.

Incident 1: A 11-year-old boy beaten to death by his teacher

The teacher Dambarudhar Rana has allegedly beaten his student, Ajay Bagarti, a 11-year-old boy of class 6 that belongs to St George High School in Bargarh district for not having finished his homework. This brutal teacher has also asked the student to beat himself as a part of the punishment. Followed by the incident on Jan 29, 2010, when the student’s parents lodged complaint in the school the teacher was forced to apologise, perhaps his apologies went in vain as the 11-year old died in hospital despite the doctor’s efforts to save him. The teacher, Dambarudhar Rana is missing for a week or so after this gruesome incident in Bhubaneswar (Orissa).

Inference

Atrocious incidents of this nature continue to happen in nook and corner of the world. Last year a girl lost her eyes in Chennai, there are few cases of self-immolation and organ damages that occurred in Schools because of teachers. How is this to be stopped? Though it is just few cases registered in India or world, there are all possibilities that it could be my child or your child in the series. How are we going to view it seriously?

Incident 2: A 16 year old Dalit girl immolates herself after being raped

The 16 year old Gomti(name has been changed for obvious reasons) was raped by an upper caste youth, Balkishan in Khadakhar village on February 12. After four days Balkishan has turned back to Gomti’s home and has taken her forcibly to a room where she was threatened. Family members were left helpless where they happened to watch what was going on. After Gomti was threatened she set herself on fire leaving their family members in grief. According to reports, Police did not file any FIR against Balkishan after the rape, perhaps hurriedly managed to file one once after the victim’s death.

Inference

When I browsed internet for this news I happened to come across ample of links with issues such as rapes, suicides, assaults and deaths of Dalit. Dalit as such means scheduled caste people who are far from literacy, comfort and even justice. Imagine a physical inflict, sexual assualt to a 16-year old girl – imagine the kind of hallucination that she would have undergone after the rape. She would have tried to console herself after the incident on Feb 12, 2010, otherwise she would have gone for the self-immolation the same day. It is the repeated torture/threatening that has forced her to commit suicide. Rapist has been punished, perhaps the major accountability is attributed to the police who allowed this to happen.

How long is this disparity about to prevail? Do we really have a solution for any of these injustice to Dalits?

Imcident 3: A female accused was given shots by a cop in UP

A cop in Amethi is dismissed from duty after he was caught on camera punching and kicking a woman murder suspect in a Sultanpur police station. The accused Sangeeta Kori is a suspect in her husband’s murder, when enquired about the murder she stood still which provoked the officer to slap and grab her hair to thrash her. This issue was given due importance by TIMES NOW as it was taken across to the UP Principal Secretary, Kunwar Fateh Bahadu, who dismissed the officer.

Video of Woman beaten up by a cop

Inference

For everyone’s information the accused did not show any interest in the enquiry as she stood absolutely still during interrogation. Yes, as per the reports she is not found guilty until now, perhaps is this issue not blown out of proportion? Is not the media taking this issue in favour of their publicity. A provoked cop shows his outburst and he was provoked for the reason that she inhibited to answer his question. Why always look at it in the order of woman, human being and accused? Why not in the order of accused, human being and woman?

Incident 4: 17 year old boy, Nitish Shukla slashed by police

17 year old , Nitish Shukla, an engineering student, was assaulted by the police in Bhopal mistaking him for a Shiv Sainik protester on Feb 15, 2010. The minor boy was taken to custody at the end of the incident. Police were rushing to arrest Shiv Sainik’s for pelting stones at a theatre showing Shah Rukh Khan’s “My name is Khan”. As a part of it, , Nitish Shukla was also victimised and thrown in prison instead of a juvenile home.

Video of 17 year old being banged by cops

Inference

Nitish Shukla, though being a 17-year old boy looks old enough to perpetrate vandalism. His physical appearance would have caused the confusion, besides in a commotion of this nature, it is quite natural that there are innocents being taken for a task. Perhaps there is nothing better that could be done other than to compensate the victim with treatment and money. It is due to the tremendous pressure that was mounted on the cops to react so violent, however giving it a wider view – the situation would have become even worse with extreme rampage and vandalism in the absence of the cops. It is the video and the sensational tactics of the media that blows these issues out of proportion.

Bottom-line

All the incidents have happened in North India. Does it make a point or is it just a mere coincidence? Is it because the standard of living has not accelerated in North India? Is it because of poverty, population and illiteracy that these incidents are way likely to happen in North India than in South India? Or is it because they are strong enough that they are often tempted to lose their temper?
