I came to my room to look for money. Thank God, men in my room stopped the work for a while. I took my purse out, it had a hundred rupee note. I was not sure if she was genuine and I decided to pull the change that was available. I somehow gathered thirty rupees from my purse and I scanned through my brother’s cupboard. He never knew what he had in his cupboard. He never had an account of how much was there in it. My mother used to sneak through and grab some money sometime. Though she replaced it, she never informed him neither he asked her even once. Anyway, they were very close leaving me alone. I was always a lonely rat in my room.
Back to the matter, I grabbed twenty rupees from his cupboard. Before I handed it over to her, I said I am going to give her fifty rupees. She starred at me as though fifty rupees is nothing. What more can a girl like me could afford to give to a stranger like her, I asked myself. No, it should be because of the questions I posed to know if she was genuine. She should have thought “so less for so many questions that you shot dog”. I saw it from her looks that that is what it meant. She seized the money off my hand and starting walking in a lightning speed. I asked her for the receipt but she gave me just a piece of paper, which had one contact number. I could not stop the woman. Then everyone in the road will look at me. No, I do not want that.
I came to my room and dialed the number that was in the paper. Someone picked the phone and delivered a reply in a colloquial slang. In Tamil, if people do not respect others, it used to project very obviously. Well, that was a voice which gave a reply in an abruptly disrespecting tone and language. He asked me to call the direct number of the home. Now I am clear that the home exists. It was the pressman who designed the paper that answered my call. Now the question is why should she rush back and vanish like a whiff of air. Answer is very obvious, she wanted to make use of my money for her purpose. How silly are people around me! Anyway I am sure she can’t make use of my fifty to buy a plot. After all that would have turned out to be an expense for her water, food or her travel. In a way, my money has solved the purpose but in a different way.
‘Thank you for your time & Have a great day’
