Death penalty and its related ethical issues

Death penalty is the practice of sentencing a person to death as an obligation of the court ordered imposition, considered as a punishment to the crime committed. Death penalty is also recognized by the titles Capital punishment, execution, executing death sentence or sentence to death. Capital punishment is believed to have originated from Latin capitallis (pertaining to head) and death penalty was just severing of head in the ancient days.

Capital punishment is executed in various ways and it differs from country to country. Few of the commonly used death sentence practices are hanging the person to death, administering a lethal injection to the person, electrocution, garroting, lethal gassing, firing a person to death using a firing squad, making him consume poison, live burial, drowning him to death, stoning to death, guillotine, beheading or decapitation, breaking wheel also known as catherine wheel and corporal punishment.

Death penalty has always been an issue of concern and of late it has earned enormous displeasure and condemnation from international organizations like UN, Amnesty International and several Human Rights organizations. It is ethically, culturally and religiously condemned almost all over the world. Death penalty is believed to be a violation of humanity as it is regarded as the assassination of a person with the consent of statutory bodies.

People who support death penalty argue that it is just a payback and it is highly convincing for them as the punishment serves as a lesson for all ages. Capital punishment is always known to inculcate fear in the minds of the public and thereby capital punishment has played a major role in the reduction of crime. While fanatics debate that it is violation of basic human rights, the main reason behind this notion is that the soul destroyed is irretrievable. In case of biased judgment, it would become another crime and additionally the life lost can never be regained. The million dollar question is whether the human race is eligible or qualified enough to assume the authority to judge who should live and who should not?

well, i find it right that the crime should be extremely brutal to award capital punishment…….

in India, as i only know a bit abt here, death sentences are very rare……and the person can always appeal against it….it’s a long process, i mean if death sentence is awarded by a lower court…then it can be challenged in High court and if needed, in supreme court after that…..if Supreme court also states the same…..then the person can still plead to the president…….

i have heard some ….445(not sure abt the number read abt 3-4 days back) plea to diluting the death sentence to lifetime sentences are lying at president……

Ya, In some extreme cases death penalty should be imposed on the accused if convicted…

Sometimes being humanitarians we have a habit of forgiving all the sins of the criminal and we jump in to conclusion that we should give him a second chance by considering his family or bla bla -here v dont bother about victim’s right to live which is curbed and suffer of his family-…

Finally I beleive, we should leave it to Victim’s family to take a final call whether to punish him or leave him….
