Vinnai Thandi Varuvaya – A love story or a crush story.
Well, the most recent movie I watched is “Vinnai Thandi Varuvaya”. I thought I should give a review and here it goes. I am not interested in reviewing the whole movie as such, perhaps would like to deal with the aspect “love” in the movie. Gautam Menon’s perspective of love is way different from the love that exists in real-time scenario. I am not talking about the love that takes a shape in 2-3 days. I am talking about love that blooms in a span of say 3-4 months or say even longer, and the longer the better.
It is a “love at first sight plot” which is used in the movie. When Karthick gets to see Jessie for the first time, he is attracted by the way she looks, walks and takes an approach towards her house. That is exactly why he keeps mentioning throughout the movie that “she is beautiful and she has a unique style”. Magnify it with a magnifying glass and you can understand the fact that love at first sight merely means that it is a crush of one person over the other.
If this is called love, then you really are in love with Will Smith, Tom Cruise, Surya, Kamalhasan and all the stars. Just because someone beautiful, good-looking, hot, sexy and arousing-enough (whatever be it) is in close proximity and within your reach, it does not mean that the feelings you have for him/her is love. Of course, for a love to trigger, a minimal amount of spark/attraction is certainly necessary, perhaps not mandatory. And if at all attraction/personality is required, to what extent should it dominate your decision? If it is just personality, looks and appearance that drives him to love her, what about the wavelength match?
It is so clear in the movie that Karthick’s feelings for Jessie and vice versa is mere crush and that is exactly why Karthick goes for a quick-proposal and the reason for it being the fear of losing her, in addition to it the train scene clearly portrays that they have a sensual attraction towards each other which made them blind enough to forget to give a second thought about the way they behaved with each other. Every scene after that clearly projects a longing from both of them for romantic moments more than for a matured understanding, which is not that vital for a solid long-term relationship. Karthick’s dialogues such as “I wanna make love to you all the time” & “I wanna sit close to you” depicts sexual tension that prevails between each other. Of course, the dialogues of this kind will have its own appreciation and delight among the audience for the fact that these arousing dialogues mounts up unusually extraordinary sexual pleasure. “Vinnay Thanndi Varuvaya” is a perfect romantic piece, perhaps that happens between 2 immature minds and it certainly happens in an unripened relationship.
Karthick calls what happens between them in the train to be “Chemistry”, and if this is Chemistry, and in the given situation, you can expect the same Chemistry in any relationship, even in incestuous relationships, therefore this is not Chemistry that exits between them, it is mere Biology. Chemistry is the urge to be romantic between each other and the best Chemistry is to enjoy the moment that causes this urge and not the result of urge. This subtle moment is the moment of enjoyment and enjoying each other is not Chemistry. Mr. Gautam Menon, have not you heard about the saying “abstinence is bliss”.
In scenarios where he wonders at Jessie’s swift reactions and decisions are picture-perfect examples of his inadequate understanding of the girl. The real love is shown only in one scene of the movie where Karthick meets Jessie after 2 years. He proposes her to marry him right away; the director depicts Karthick’s excruciating pain of missing her for 2 complete years. There is a maturity shown in Karthick’s character where he best judges how Jessie would react if he misses that particular opportunity. Though the whole scene is just an imagination, this is the real part where real love blooms between both of them.
Besides, for any and every guy, this movie is an eye-opener for the fact that it is absolute absurdity to decide his love based on first impression. I am sure had Karthick known about Jessie’s insecurity and her weird way of looking at life, he would have not given a thought to select her at all. For that matter, any guy be it, irrespective of the fact that the girl is extremely good-looking, it would be absolutely easy for him to decide after he gets to know the girl better. His decision would be based on various aspects such as the girl’s aspiration, character and approach towards life despite being carried away by her looks.
Love as such is a feeling that triggers between two hearts (irrespective of gender) without the knowledge of each other. I mean when you look at a person and when you like any of his/hers acts, that simply means you are empathizing yourself in the same scenario and you think you would have reacted the same way the other person has reacted or he would have reacted better than you, therefore you start admiring the person for the reason that he/she is just like you or in some ways better than you. This is in shortly termed as wavelength match. On the whole, the movie is just about the cons of falling in love with someone merely based on first impression, which simply means a decision based on crush leads to nothing good.
If a love of this kind continues to happen, can you see anyone sincere enough in his/her commitment for that relationship to last long? If in case he/she is loyal, it is merely by luck, which means it is a relationship that is destined not determined by the couple. This kind of love will lead to no good to this society and will certainly increase abortion rates.

Ramya,
I certainly respect your views but stand apart from your final opinions that the movie is more of lust filled crush rather than age old definition of “Love” which is un-conditional reciprocation of the interest’s involved..
I believe, The perception of seeing “Love” – a relationship which occurs b/w 2 genders as a separate entity against the biological phenomenon during this relationship that occurs b/w them is the root cause of all this discussion..But my views in this critical one is,
– Love is the crux and rest all which u call them as in-security,lust surround them sometimes even bind them to form one strong bond.. of-course, w/o the crux everything breaks loose..
Whatever or however divine or you may define it,finally its all X Y chromosomes, after all v all are humans with all this bio-chemical factors..
As they say – “oodal illatha kaadhal ethu ???”
Ramya Writes: I could not agree with you more. My point is the love was not based on understanding, it was just the refection of the reaction inside..
Better Stop writing Moview Reviews..
